If you need to file your taxes past the April 15 due date, you will need to file IRS Form 4868. You can download IRS Form 4868 extension from the IRS official site or you could file the form online. All IRS tax forms are available online, including the IRS Form 2848 revocation.
IRS Form 4868 | All You Need to Know
Completing IRS Extension Form 4868
Enter your name and address as you will show it on your Form 1040. If you are filing jointly, you will need to add your spouse’s name as it will appear and in the order that both of your names will appear on your 1040. Part I also provides space for an agent if you use an agent who is acting for you. If you changed your name and have not notified social security yet, you must do that before you file Form 4868.
As with all IRS tax forms, you will need to enter your social security – and your spouse’s social security number if you are filing jointly. If you are not a resident of the United States and don’t have a social security number, you should get an individual taxpayer identification number for aliens from the IRS before you can file the form asking for an extension. That number is not a requirement for filing Form 4868, but you will need it to file your tax return.
This form has just two parts. The second part asks you about the income tax that is due. For this, you can round the amount. However, if you round this number, the rest of the numbers must be rounded off to whole dollars. If an amount is less than 50 cents, drop it to the next lowest dollar, and from 50 to 99 cents, round it up to the next highest number. If you are adding two numbers with cents, round only the total.
For your estimated tax liability for the year, enter the amount you expect to report for the year. The number will be from the current 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, 1040NR-EZ, 1040NR, 1040-SS or 1040-PR. If you do not expect to owe taxes, enter zero. The amount must be as close to the expected amount as possible. If the IRS deems that the amount is not close, it will rescind your extension.
If you made some payments throughout the year, estimate those payments or enter the amount you did pay if you know how much you actually paid. In the balance due box – Line 6 on this year’s form – subtract the estimated payments you made from the amount you expect to pay. If you paid in more than you expect to pay, enter zero.
Enter the amount you are sending with your extension request. If you can’t send the entire amount you think you will owe, then send as much as you can. The IRS will charge penalties and interest based on the amount due, so the less you pay late, the lower the penalties and interest will be.
If you are out of the country but are a U.S. citizen, check the box labeled ‘Taxpayers Who Are Out of the Country.’ If you are not subject to withholding tax, and your return is due on the 15th day of the 6th month after your tax year ends, then check the box labeled ‘Taxpayers Who File Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ.’
IRS Form 2848 Revocation
If you are giving someone authorization to represent you before the IRS, you need to file an IRS power of attorney – Form 2848. That person must be eligible to represent others in front of the IRS. Part II of the form is for the designation of a representative. At the time you no longer want that person to represent you, you must file an IRS Form 2848 revocation.
If you want someone to ask for and go over confidential tax information, but that person should not represent you in front of the IRS, then use Form 8821. IRS Form 8821 instructions are available here.
