The California sales tax applies to all purchases of most tangible product made within the state. This special taxation rule mostly covers purchases from in-state sellers. But it can also cover out-of-state retailers if they work through California vendors or advertisers.

Though it covers almost all tangible items, there are some goods exempted from sales tax such as prescription medicine. Check some of the exemption in this document released by the California State Board of Equalization.

California imposes a state-wide sales tax rate of 7.25%. Some local jurisdictions in the state charge additional district tax rates, which increase the overall sales tax paid by sellers in their areas. The additional district taxes range from 0.10% to 1.00% and can pull up the sales tax to as high as 9.75% per local area.

Some businesses will pay higher sales tax if the reported purchases are from the branches in many cities and counties. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration has tabulated in this document the sales tax rates per country and city in the state. Computation of California sales tax may seem very easy. Needed foremost for the computation is the overall tax rate (i.e., the basic state-wide 7.25% tax rate, plus all applicable district tax rate). The seller’s sales tax declaration depends on the city or county of operation. The overall tax rate will then be multiplied by the total amount of sales reported by the seller.
