Our mission is to protect the rights of individuals and businesses to get the best possible tax resolution with the IRS.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ:
We have recently become aware of companies and/or organizations who are calling people using the generic name "Tax Relief Center" for their phone solicitation activities. TaxReliefCenter.org does not make these automated calls to consumers and it is our policy not to engage in this form of marketing. If you have received such a call, please let us know by emailing [email protected] so that we may report this unauthorized activity.
Additionally, the IRS does not use email, text messages or social media to discuss tax debts or refunds with taxpayers. The IRS initiates most contacts with taxpayers through regular mail delivered by the U.S. Postal Service. There are special circumstances when they may reach out via phone regarding overdue tax bills or delinquencies, but almost always only after they’ve already sent a letter first.
UPDATE: Recently we have learned of instances where consumers are also getting automated calls regarding “unpaid taxes”. Do not respond to these calls as the IRS will typically send letters or notices via U.S. mail. So, if any company or organization calls claiming you have unpaid taxes, DO NOT respond to these unsolicited calls.

What is TurboTax?

TurboTax is an online program that helps people file their taxes. As part of the Intuit software family, it has a reputation for being easy to use and even offers a free TurboTax calculator so you can see the amount of refund you might get now and next year.

How Do You Start Using TurboTax?

The first thing you do is set up an account. They ask you a few questions like what your email address is and then you create a password so you can log-in. If you have used TurboTax in the past to file taxes, it will show you any returns you’ve stored with them once you sign-in.

How Much Does TurboTax Cost?

There are two sides to TurboTax. One allows you free tax filing, while the other one requires you to pay a fee to file. TurboTax wants you to choose to pay, so you’ll see that option quite a bit as you enter your tax information. If you do pay, they offer to add the details from last year’s taxes for free, so there is less work for you. They’ll also connect you with someone at TurboTax who can answer any question you might have when figuring out your taxes.

The free version is not hard to use, if you want to save money. You’ll just need to choose the “free edition” when the time comes to pick one.

What Information Does TurboTax Need?

They start by asking you to enter your name, address, and zip code. They’ll also want to know your birthday. When typing in your name, use the one on your social security card. Next, they ask basic questions, like what your marital status is. You’ll also tell them if you have a job and what kind of deductions you might have. For example, did you pay student loans this year? That means you can deduct some of the interest.

Once you answer the questions on the screen, TurboTax decides what filing status is best for you, whether you’re single or married. You have a chance to change that if you want to file your taxes differently.

When Do You Enter Income?

After TurboTax gets all the simple information down, it’s time to enter your income as it is listed on the forms you get from your job, or customers if you’re self-employed. If the company you work for has a TurboTax account, that information might already be entered. TurboTax will also tell you if you’re missing any important documents.

How Do You File?

The nice thing about TurboTax is it asks a lot of questions, so you get all the right deductions and credits, plus it does the math for you. When you reach the end, it will tell you how much refund you’ll get or if you owe taxes this year. All you need to do is follow the online instructions to federal e-file and you’re done.

TurboTax will also tell you how to download copies of the tax forms, so you can save them for your records. Next year, if you use TurboTax again, those forms will be there for you to look at, if necessary.
